The Project ICELIFE aims to establish and continuously develop a replicable circular economy hub to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable and circular economy. The project’s pilot activities are conducted in Finland with the aim to create a model transferable to diverse European contexts.
In Finland, reuse remains at approximately 2–3% versus an EU average of 12–13%, indicating a notable structural gap in circularity. Significant volumes of textiles, construction timber and wood products, and WEEE that are fit for reuse or repair are still routed to energy recovery or low-value recycling.
The project ReStyle & ReUse Hub addresses this gap by developing
a replicable circular-economy shopping-centre model and piloting it in a dedicated building of the Matkus shopping center complex in Kuopio. The Hub uniquely combines reuse, sharing-economy services, repair, competence development and consumer engagement in a single high-footfall retail environment.
The hub aims to make reuse a desirable and convenient option, integrating New European Bauhaus values. Its iterative conceptualization, piloting, and refinement develops human-centric solutions for product durability, reuse,
and repair, refining a comprehensive, transferable blueprint.
The project advances smart circular material management and value chain
transformation by piloting digital platforms, optimized logistics and innovative solutions with waste centers, SMEs, NGOs, and R&D
actors.
It develops standardized tools for CO2 savings and LCA verification, laying the groundwork for accreditation and integration into regulatory reporting. Training and employment initiatives create new circular economy experts and foster entrepreneurship through inclusive business models.
Strategic communication and consumer engagement drive behavioral change, while results are consolidated into a transferable package to support replication, policy uptake, and long-term sustainability in line with LIFE objectives.
